Ekaterina Rozhkova (b. 1969, Moscow) is a multidisciplinary artist and curator working across a range of techniques in drawing, painting, and total installation. She works with the history of place, with archives, with the material world, and with themes of memory and the past, reworking them for the present.

She graduated from the Moscow Central Art School attached to the Surikov Institute, and from VGIK, from the workshop of V. A. Bogdanov, in the production design faculty. She undertook a residency at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Tokyo, Japan. She has taken part in international fairs, biennials and festivals, including Art Miami, The Armory Show and ARCO. Ekaterina Rozhkova's works are held in the collections of the Novosibirsk State Art Museum, the Surgut Art Gallery, the Ekaterina Cultural Foundation, MMOMA, Zelinsky & Rosen, ABN AMRO Bank, Petrocommerce Bank, and Fleming Bank (London), as well as in private collections in Russia, Estonia, Japan, Switzerland, Spain, Germany, France, Israel, the UK and the USA.

ARTIST STATEMENT

What interests me is personal history. It runs through every series I make — whether the subject is ordinary objects, architectural forms, clothing, mechanisms, or nature. In everything I work on, I am drawn to the process itself, and to form — to the painstaking work with detail, when it comes to the plastic media of drawing and painting. People, and the world of things, are a way of telling personal stories.

What new thing can a person truly invent? I think one has to set out from, and draw on, one's own life — the one thing one knows for certain. In my works, the dominant role belongs to the emotional element, which carries within it a particular state of the observer. The environment in my works is perceived not as an objectively existing reality, but as a subjectively lived state.

I have never chosen complicated concepts for my art. My path began, quite naturally, from a rigorous academic training, which is why I made series of works in the classical genres. I draw the life I live. Realism is a very broad thing; at the heart of my own realist approach there is always the same choice — in favour of the quiet still life, the portrait of an object, the landscape, the piece of architecture. Another of my ways of speaking is context — working with a place, treating it as a stage and as a point of support and inspiration. To this belong all the projects that have taken shape outside the studio, within walls and rooms that people have left behind, historically saturated with meanings and with the traces of other lives. One might say that my education as a production designer for cinema has found its fulfilment in these projects.

My subjects remain, always, the memory of things. The theme of the house, in both its wider and narrower senses.
